John Legend Reflects On His Early Days -- When Kanye West Was Opening For Him

You may not experience who John Stephens is, but you're probably conversant with his superstar persona: John Legend. While he may now have the stuff that, uh, legends are made of, his struggle for success has taken the R&B isaac M. Singer through a long trek of trials and tribulations.

John Legend was in a reflective humour when he sat down with MTV News, recalling his early days. "I would dally ... all these small places in New York where a lot of young musicians arrest their start up," Legend aforementioned of his music career after moving to NYC in 2000. "[I would do] whatsoever I could do to get people talking about my music. A couple of days into it, we could get, like, 300 or 400 citizenry to show up at [New York music venue] S.O.B.'s, but at number 1 we were happy to get, like, 50 or 60 or 70 people to show up.

"But that whole grind is just part of how you get discovered, how you develop yourself as a performer," he added. "I think it makes everything I do now more than worth it, because I put in all that time and all that effort."

After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania and working as a management consultant, Legend made his rounds through the cabaret circuit in New York, performing under his veridical name earlier gaining the moniker John Legend from his peers.

"John Legend is a nickname that some friends started calling me, and it kind of grew into my point name," the singer said. " 'Legend' is something that I never would stimulate chosen for myself primitively. It grew to the point where more citizenry in my circle would know me by that name than by my real name. I had to make a decision.

"I was simply like, 'You know what? Let's just now go for it. People are leaving to pay attention and I'm departure to either live up to my name or I'm not,' " he continued. "My bet was on me trying to live up to the name."

Despite being a solo artist, Legend said, he never went through the grind lone and acknowledged some of his fellow artists world Health Organization struggled with him during his early beginnings, including Jazmine Sullivan, Jill Scott, Bilal and Kanye West.

"Kanye was inactive grinding it out when I was grinding it out," Legend recalled. "We did shows together. He actually opened for me at one point. It was weird, 'cause people didn't know him at all. He was really well-known in the [music] business because he was producing for everybody, just no one kind of in the general public knew world Health Organization he was as a rapper.

"We did a evince at S.O.B.'s, and the crowd was definitely acquiring restless piece he was performing," he added. "It's hard to play a live shew when multitude have no idea world Health Organization you are. I knew he was going to be majuscule and was going to be a big hotshot, but at the clip, no one knew. Little did they know world Health Organization he was going to be."

Two multiplatinum albums and five Grammys later, Legend is prepping to going Evolver in October, with "Green Light" as the first single, and the singer in agreement that his hard work has doubtless paid off.

"You will non make it in this business and succeed over a long period of time unless you work really hard," Legend explained. "I had to learn as I went when I was grinding. And it does make you appreciate your success. It makes you realize that it's truly about the work. It's really around making the best music you canful make. It's really around working hard.

"At the goal of the day, there's only a few major stars in the music business, and then there's all these people that are aspiring to be that."

Make sure to watch the premier of John Legend's "Green Light" video on "FNMTV" Friday (August 22).

Game Slams Jesse Jackson -- Twice -- On New Tracks With Lil Wayne, Nas

"It's a hundred different messages you can take from the song," Game said on Monday good afternoon, cruising through Houston on his way to a radio station. "It's called 'My Life,' so tune in." The video for the song, from his forthcoming LP L.A.X.,premieres on "FNMTV" Friday (starting at 8 p.m. ET).

"And I ain't no sermoniser, but here's my Erick Sermon," he raps on the phonograph record. "So eat this black music, and tell me how it tastes now/ And f Jesse Jackson 'cause it ain't nigh race now."

Later he adds "Walk through the william Henry Gates of underworld, see my Impala parked in movement with the high beams on/ Me and the devil sharin' chronic blunts/ Listening to The Chronic album/ Playin' backwards, shootin' at pictures of Don Imus for target practice."

It's very provocative and he goes after Jackson even harder on a different raceway from the album, "Letter to the King," that leaked on Thursday (August 14).

The song a duet with Nas has bars that ar lyrically amazing, and will probably be the pair's most talked-about collaboration in time. Of course, the "King" the duette refers to is Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. At times, the deuce talk directly to the late civil-rights leader as if he were smooth alive; at others, they ponder aloud about what could have been.

"If Dr. King marched today, would Bill Gates march?" Game raps on the third verse. "I know Obama would, just would Hillary take share?/ I feel the pain of Nelson Mandela/ 'Cause when it rains it pours, I motive Rihanna's umbrella/ For Coretta Scott [King's] teardrops/ When she got the telephone call that the future just took a f---ing headshot."

If you don't remember anything else about the song, Game's controversial last line volition stay with you.

"I curiosity why Jesse Jackson ain't catch him before his body dropped," he asks. "Would he give me the answer?/ Probably not."

At press time, Game had non responded to MTV News' requests for comment on why he's going after Jackson a longtime King associate, who was present at his character assassination in 1968 so hard, only he did speak with us at length near L.A.X. in Houston earlier this week.

Several other noteworthy tracks from the record album hit the Net on Thursday (August 14), including "Angel," which features graeco-Roman name-dropping from an outspoken Game piece Common guest-drops metaphors. There's also a song called "Ya Heard" that features the Compton track-slayer piquant in some rap repartee with Ludacris.

Game described the album as "just me taking flight, man. This album is gonna be real special from beginning to end, it's gonna knock."

In some interviews Game has said that this will be his last record album, but this week he told us his ultimate goal was to be known as the "charles Herbert Best lyricist." It may take a couple more albums before he's there or possibly just a battle with Jay-Z.

Recently on KISS-FM in Phoenix, Game admitted that he's a fan of Jay's music, but predicted that a battle 'tween the deuce of them would be one-sided against Jigga.

"I'm young, stupid, disrespectful," Game said. "I haven't confused a beef. I killed a solid group limb by limb consider what happened to G-Unit."

Speaking of the Unit, estranged group member Young Buck appears in the video for "My Life," which also co-stars Lil Wayne.

"Buck is in the tV for a split irregular, robbing the liquor depot!" Game smiled. "Lil Wayne came out to California he re-routed his tour coach, made a U-turn for me, [so we could] shoot the video. I think the video is gonna do some great things."

L.A.X. is due on August 26.

Madonna - Madonna Stunned By Sexual Cleansing Ritual

Pop superstar MADONNA was left shocked and appalled by a bizarre sex ritual which young widows in Malawi have to go through after their husbands die - because it fuels the spread of Aids in the country.

In her new documentary I Am Because We Are, Madonna chronicles the plight of the people in the African nation, where she adopted her son David in 2006, and she admits some local customs left her feeling sick.

In one segment of the harrowing new film, the star reveals a young widow is forced to have sex three times with a stranger from outside her village as part of a cleansing ritual.

She says, "When this woman's husband dies of Aids, she is required by the village head tribal chief to go through this sexual cleansing.

"Until she does, basically the village is, like, at a standstill. And, if she refuses to do it, she will be ostracised by everyone."
